In recent developments following the Asia Semifinal, it has been confirmed that both Ilias Kuliev and Anatolii Borisenko have received a four-year ban after their appeals to contest positive drug tests were rejected by CrossFit. This ruling follows the earlier announcement that three of the top five male competitors at the event tested positive for banned substances.
Details of the Sanction
Both athletes’ sanctions are retroactively effective from May 19, 2024. Kuliev, who secured a third-place finish, was found to have metabolites of Drostanolone in his system. Meanwhile, Borisenko, who finished fourth, tested positive for metabolites of GW501516.
Implications for the Asia Semifinal Competitors
This situation escalates within the competitive landscape, as Ivan Kukartsev, the first-place finisher, alongside North America East team athlete Tyler Lee, was also implicated for failed drug tests. While Kuliev and Borisenko’s appeals have been definitively denied, Kukartsev and Lee remain in the appeal process, leaving uncertainty in their futures.
Impact on the CrossFit Games
The fallout from these positive tests also affected the line-up for the 2024 CrossFit Games. Following Kukartsev’s disqualification due to his drug test results, Ilya Makarov was approached to take his place. However, Makarov was unable to secure a visa, ultimately leaving Arthur Semenov as the sole male representative from Asia at the upcoming Games.
