Dave Castro, the General Manager of Sport for CrossFit, has addressed the heartfelt remarks made by Luka Dukic regarding the tragic passing of his brother, Lazar Dukic, during the 2024 CrossFit Games.
Luka Dukic’s Emotional Post
In his recent social media post, Luka shared the harrowing details of the final moments he spent with his brother. He recounted how they had developed a strategy for the run and swim test in Event 1, designed for him to stay behind Lazar. However, upon reaching the finish line, Luka discovered that he could not locate his brother.
Dave Castro’s Response
In response, Castro noted that the timing chip indicated Lazar had finished the event, a claim that does not align with Luka’s experience. Luka expressed profound dissatisfaction with how both CrossFit and Dave Castro managed the continuation of the Games following this tragedy. He mentioned that while there was an attempt to respect their privacy during the event, his request not to be shown on screen during the tribute was overlooked, stating, “my wish was not respected.”
Castro’s Apology and Clarifications
Castro issued an apology, acknowledging his misstep in stating that the decision to proceed with the Games had been “blessed” by the Dukic family. He clarified that there was never an intention to place the weight of that decision on Luka, the Dukic family, or the fellow athletes competing in the Games.
Continuing the Competition
The CrossFit Games proceeded as initially planned, with a tribute to Lazar held the day after his passing. Despite this solemn occasion, there was significant division among competitors about continuing the events, with some choosing to withdraw from the competition.
Reactions and Outcomes
While some reports hinted at the possibility of canceling the competition and evenly distributing prize money to support Lazar Dukic’s family, this did not come to fruition, resulting in further discontent among participants. Ultimately, Tia-Clair Toomey and James Sprague went on to claim the titles of the fittest woman and man in an event that will forever be remembered for the loss of Lazar Dukic.
