The 2024 Legends Masters CrossFit Games Overview
The 2024 Legends Masters CrossFit Games are set to kick off from August 29 to September 1 at the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Center in Birmingham, AL. This exciting event will showcase the most elite age group individual athletes as they compete for the championship title at the end of the season.
Event Structure and Changes
This year marks a significant restructuring, as CrossFit HQ has separated the “Divisional Games”—which include age group and adaptive athletes—from the elite individual and team competitions. This change aims to enhance participation, with the top 40 athletes from each division making their way to the championship, alongside the introduction of a new 70-plus age division. The Legends Masters Games will manage this championship event, emphasizing high-level competition among the participating athletes.
Ten Events to Conquer
Over the span of four days, athletes will face a total of 10 demanding events that reflect classic CrossFit movements and programming. Below, we delve into three standout workouts that athletes must master:
Event 2
4 rounds for time:
- 4 rope climbs, 15-feet
- 6 sandbag cleans, 150/100 pounds
- 40-foot handstand walk
Time cap: 12 minutes
Analysis: Though it appears to be a race, athletes will need strategic pacing to meet the time cap, averaging only four reps per minute. Each repetition will be physically demanding; thus, precise execution is crucial, as a no-rep can significantly impact their time. The handstand walk’s requirements (whether unbroken or with allowed breaks) will further dictate their approach. Athletes should start planning their strategy from the very beginning to optimize their performance.
Event 4
For time:
- 4 snatches, 135/95 pounds
- 3 snatches, 165/115 pounds
- 2 snatches, 195/135 pounds
- 1 snatch, 225/155 pounds
Time cap: 2 minutes
Analysis: This single-round snatch speed ladder challenges athletes to perform all 10 repetitions without elimination or retries. The final barbell weight for each athlete is designed to be between 80 and 100 percent of their one-rep max, necessitating quick transitions and efficient movement. Spectators can anticipate an exhilarating finish in the last minute, where athletes may push their limits for an adrenaline-fueled race against the clock.
Event 5
For time:
- 75 wallballs, 20/14 pounds
- 40 shoulder-to-overhead, 115/80 pounds
- 30 dumbbell step-overs, 50/35 pounds, 24/20 inches
- 40 dumbbell snatch, 50/35 pounds
- 75 wallballs, 20/14 pounds
Time cap: 15 minutes
Analysis: This workout places intensive demands on the shoulders and the grip through a series of challenging movements. Mimicking the benchmark WOD Karen, the incorporation of additional exercises tests pacing and endurance. Athletes must carefully manage their energy, particularly when tackling the shoulder-to-overhead after the initial set of wallballs, ensuring that cumulative fatigue doesn’t detrimentally affect the final repetitions.
